Adeeb Khalid is the Jane and Raphael Bernstein Professor of Asian Studies and History at Carleton College, where he has taught since 1993. He received his BA from McGill University in 1986 and his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1993.

Although Khalid teaches widely in Russian, Soviet, and Ottoman history, his scholarly work is devoted to Central Asia in the modern period—from the late-18th century on, when the region was conquered by Russian and Chinese armies and was divided between those two empires.

Khalid has written extensively on the region during imperial, then Communist rule, as well as in the period of independence that followed the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
